YouTube relaxes rules on profanity and video monetization. According to the platform, the guidelines, introduced in November 2022, constitute a “stricter approach” than originally intended.

In effect since last Tuesday (7), The new policy allows the use of “moderate to strong profanity” without the risk of demonization. However, words can only be played after the first 7 seconds of the video.

Previously, “inappropriate language” in the first 15 seconds made content unsuitable for monetization. That is, it will not have ads displayed during replication.

Despite the “relief” on the use of profanity on YouTube, videos can be penalized in certain circumstances. If the inappropriate language is repeated throughout most of the video, the video will not be eligible for ad revenue.

The new rules should give creators more freedom to continue producing material without major changes. In addition, the platform promises to make certain changes so that youtubers who use profanity often have limited ads.

According to YouTube, the old rules of the platform were applied retroactively. As a result, countless creators have lost revenue from legacy content.

While the new guidelines don’t reverse the policy implemented in 2022, the platform has committed to re-examining videos that affect monetization.

Music videos will also have new monetization rules.

Rules for music videos

Regarding music videos, YouTube has clarified that profanity used in the intro, ending, or background music / backing track will not affect monetization. Something not allowed in previous policy.

Despite everything, Using inappropriate language in headlines and cover photos (thumbnails) will still be a factor in preventing content from monetizing.. This rule applies to both clips and creator videos.
