One Old version of Shein app for Android can copy clipboard data mobile phone and send them to a remote server. The behavior, which is the ability to disclose sensitive information, was discovered by cybersecurity experts at Microsoft.

According to the report released on Monday (6), the engine was available in version 7.9.2 of the app From the Singapore-based fashion retailer that came to the Google Play Store on December 16, 2021. The company explains that the software periodically reads the contents of the device’s clipboard.

If a certain pattern is detected, the program will copy the captured data and send it remotely. While the Redmond giant did not find any malicious intent in this action, it assessed that the behavior was not necessary for the app to work.

Also, since many users are prone to copy and paste financial data, login credentials, and personal information, malicious use of the mechanism can facilitate data leakage. But, found no evidence that the behavior was the target of cyberattacks.

Update engine eliminated

The ability to read and copy content to the clipboard of Android phones offered by the Shein app was discovered in March last year and reported to e-commerce and Google. According to the report, the behavior was removed in an update released in May 2022.

Those who have the dealer app installed on their smartphone for a longer time and don’t use it often should check its version and update it to the latest version if they haven’t already.

Other recommendations given by experts are to install applications only from the official store of the operating system, exclude programs that behave strangely, and use security tools to protect the device.
