The researchers identified and analyzed the enzyme Huc, which can generate electricity from hydrogen gas. In doing so, it uses the low amount of hydrogen in the atmosphere to produce energy.

Scientists isolated this enzyme using a bacterium called Mycobacterium smegmatis. At the same time, according to experts, Huc’s discovery has invaluable potential for the development of small devices powered by “energy in the air” as an alternative to solar powered devices.

Huc is reported to be extremely efficient and stable. It can consume hydrogen even at a level below the atmosphere – 0.00005% of the air a person breathes is enough for him.

The researchers also noted that a key challenge for future studies is to scale up Huc production. When the enzyme is produced in sufficient quantity, it can be used to create devices that draw energy from the air.
