Gestational diabetes mellitus is characterized by an increase in blood glucose levels and is detected during pregnancy. The study authors noted that light exposure at bedtime may be a risk factor for this condition. At the same time, women with gestational diabetes are almost 10 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who did not have glucose problems during pregnancy.
The study included 741 women in their second trimester of pregnancy. The participants’ light exposure was measured using an actigraph worn on their wrists.
