The researchers measured the impact of cognitive tasks on a group of 16 men and women. It turned out that participants who experienced mental fatigue had an increased sense of tension during exercise.

During the tests, participants completed a 90-minute task of identifying strings of letters on the screen. Then they had to lift weights. In another experiment, people completed a series of resistance exercises followed by a 20-minute bike ride. They performed cognitive tasks before and between exercises. After the cognitive tasks, the participants took an online test to confirm their level of fatigue.

Scientists recommend that coaches reduce the cognitive load in athletes. Interestingly, smartphone use before and during training and competitions was also linked to such a load.
