Data obtained by the Guardian shows that the State Department turned down a record 1,104 academics and graduate students in 2022. The sharp rise in rejections came after the government hardened its stance on scientific ties with China.

MI5 had previously warned of a growing threat of espionage, major research centers had quietly closed, and the Chinese government had accused a leading Chinese genomics company of regularly attempting to hack into the NHS genetic database.
