Mayo Clinic pediatric infectious disease specialist Dr. Nipuni Rajapakse explained whether you can eat fruits close to moldy.

A fluff or cotton-like white coating may appear on the fruit. However, a few moldy fruits isn’t a reason to throw the whole batch away. You need to get rid of only those that can come into direct contact with moldy fruits, as well as moldy real fruits.

Also, if more than a quarter of all fruit is covered with mold, it is generally better to get rid of all fruit. But if the rest of the berries look good, they are most likely edible after washing them well.

If you’ve noticed mold after just starting to eat a fruit, you shouldn’t panic. You are unlikely to get sick from a small amount of mold. However, if you eat too much, you may experience abdominal pain, vomiting and nausea. However, this happens quite rarely.

News cannot be equated with a doctor’s prescription. Consult an expert before making a decision.
