Instead of manually integrating the sensors, MIT engineers decided to print the sensors directly onto the moving parts of the mechanism using conductive 3D printing filament. This gives the devices the ability to determine the angular position, rotation speed and direction of rotation.

To simplify the manufacturing process, the researchers created a SolidWorks CAD plug-in that automatically integrates sensors into a mechanism model, which can then be sent directly to a 3D printer for manufacturing.
