The incident occurred as a result of the car losing control while cornering, hitting the pavement and partially deforming the rim. The vehicle was under manual control at the time and no casualties were reported.
Despite 16 incidents, Apple’s autonomous cars outperformed cars from other companies testing autonomous driving technologies. By comparison, Waymo vehicles were involved in 227 crashes, Cruise vehicles 203, and Zoox vehicles 72.
The department’s data also shows that Apple currently operates 67 vehicles and 201 test drivers equipped with its sensors.
