Birds of the discovered species have developed the ability to consume poisonous food and turn it into their own poison. These are Regent’s Whistler (Pachycephala schlegelii) and Red Warty Bell (Aleadryas rufinucha).
The poison found in the bodies and feathers of these birds is called batracotoxin. It is an incredibly potent neurotoxin that in high concentrations causes muscle spasms and cardiac arrest soon after contact.
According to the researchers, the birds are poisoned as a result of an evolutionary arms race. Toxicity allows them to effectively protect themselves from predators.
