Experts have listed some tips for those who love outdoor activities but are wary of ticks.
-
Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved, heavy clothing. So the ticks will have a smaller target area. You will also immediately notice a tick on your clothes. Tuck your pants into your socks, shoes or boots while doing this so that ticks don’t get under your pants.
-
Use insect repellent. It should contain DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), paramenthanediol (PMD), or 2-undecanone. Apply 0.5% permethrin-containing products to your clothing and equipment as well.
-
Check for ticks after returning from the street. Ticks can enter the home through clothing or pets.
-
Check for ticks on pets. Discuss with your veterinarian which tick protection products your pet needs.
-
Shower within two hours of arriving home. Scientific research shows that taking a shower reduces the risk of developing Lyme disease and may be effective in reducing the likelihood of developing other diseases.
