The Japanese holding company Sega Sammy Holdings will buy the Finnish game developer Rovio Entertainment Oyj, known for the Angry Birds franchise, for 706 million euros.

The media wrote about the possible agreement at the beginning of the year, last weekend it was reported that its amount could reach one billion dollars.

As noted in the document, the merger is done with the goal of Sega’s growth in the global gaming market. Together with Rovio, the Japanese developer will grow the fan base and publish Rovio’s products on various platforms.

The Finnish company’s board of directors recommends shareholders to accept Sega’s offer, 49% of shareholders voted in favor, including the Hed family who founded the company.

The deal is scheduled to close in the second quarter of 2023 or 2024. The Japanese developer has yet to receive the appropriate approvals from regulators. After the news of the operation, the company’s shares rose 18% to 9.16 euros.

In February, Rovio decided to remove Angry Birds Classic from Google Play.
