Known as “side download”, this feature will allow users to install apps without using the App Store. This means developers will be exempted from paying 15-30% commission to Apple.

And that will happen in the fall of 2023 – that’s when iOS 17 is expected to be released.

Note that the European Union previously passed the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into effect on November 1, 2022. It requires IT companies to provide access to their services and platforms to other companies and developers.

Apple claims that “third-party downloading” “undermines privacy and security protections” that iPhone users rely on. This makes them vulnerable to malware, fraud, and data snooping.

Third-party app stores could expand beyond the EU if other countries pass similar laws. The US, for example, is also considering a bill that would require Apple to allow “third-party downloads.”
