Bank of Russia President Elvira Nabiullina said transfers in digital rubles would be free and the Central Bank also set a limit for the monthly replenishment of a digital wallet.

“Transfers in digital rubles will be absolutely free for people. We have determined the amount of 300 thousand rubles per month to replenish the digital wallet, ”Nabiullina said during a speech in the State Duma, her words are given on the Telegram channel of the Bank of Russia.

The regulator is ready to start piloting the digital ruble. First, it will be tested on a small number of customers, and then the tool will be offered to everyone.

Nabiullina said that people will decide for themselves which form of Russian money to use, adding that “cash will always be needed anyway.”

  • The digital ruble is the third form of Russian currency after cash and non-cash. Such rubles will be stored in the digital wallets of Russians and companies that will be opened on the platform of the Central Bank.
  • Earlier, the Bank of Russia announced April 1 as the start date for testing the digital ruble. As reported, 13 banks have already confirmed their technical readiness to carry out operations.
  • In March, the State Duma approved in first reading a bill on the introduction of a digital ruble. The deadline to prepare the amendments for the second reading is May 19.
