The company’s AI chief, John Giannandrea, has been working since 2018 to make Apple more competitive in this space, but says the company has been cautious about experimenting with AI and is instead focusing on the practical implementation of iPhone features, sources say.

This conservative approach has led some engineers to argue that Apple should be more tolerant of experimentation. However, Apple executives are wary of allowing Siri developers to push the voice assistant to approach LLM-focused chatbots, which are considered more interesting than useful. Engineers believe that the company lacks “greed”.

Apple is also focusing on running AI and machine learning features directly on users’ devices, both for faster response times and because of the company’s commitment to user privacy. However, LLMs tend to run in the cloud, and some doubt that they will also work on local devices.

Despite these issues, Information sources claim that Apple engineers are starting to work on some key LLM features that could be introduced in next year’s iOS update. Details of these features are not yet known, but the move could mean a shift towards more ambitious AI experimentation and innovation at Apple.
