Up Aerospace has launched a suborbital rocket carrying more than a dozen experimental payloads for NASA, including the remains of an astronaut. However, about three seconds after launch, an anomaly occurred in the rocket, as a result of which it exploded. Incredibly, the ashes survived the eruption and were discovered.

Celestis’ Aurora Flight mission included the cremated remains of chemist Louise Ann O’Dean, as well as NASA astronaut Philip K. Chapman, who died in April 2021.

The received payloads will fly again on Perseverance Flight, the company’s next mission. The rocket also carried 13 payloads received as part of the TechRise Student Challenge, although NASA will not return the payload, but promises to launch other TechRise experiments in the future.
