Nearly 2,000 attendees from across the United States attended the first face-to-face conference since 2019. During the conference, some participants were reported to have tested positive, so conference leaders canceled in-person training, emailed all staff up-to-date CDC guidance, and offered longer hotel stays for sick attendees who needed to self-isolate.

CDC spokesperson Kristen Nordlund said the conference was held in accordance with current CDC guidelines and that “many of those attending the conference prefer to wear masks.” However, some attendees did not wear masks, maintain social distancing or take other measures to prevent transmission of COVID-19 during the event. As a result, at least 35 people became infected.
