The study, published in the journal BMJ, was conducted among 67,726 US nurses who have participated in the Health Workers’ Health Study since 1989.

During the study, the researchers analyzed participant questionnaires about childhood abuse, death, and autopsy data to determine the cause of death. As a result, 2410 cases of premature death were identified. Those who were abused as children had a significantly higher risk of dying earlier than those who had no such experience.

According to the study, severe physical abuse was associated with a three-fold increased risk of death from suicide, poisoning and injury, and a 2.4-fold increased risk of death from digestive tract diseases.

Serious sexual violence increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 2.5 times, and more than three times from injury, poisoning and respiratory infections, and more than four times from suicide and gastrointestinal diseases.

According to scientists, physical and sexual abuse can lead to changes in the immune system and brain development, increasing vulnerability to late-onset mental problems and unhealthy habits.
