The study involved 371,159 people aged 50 to 71 whose data were collected over 23.5 years.
During this time, 165,698 deaths occurred. Participants followed either a low-carb diet or a low-fat diet.
The results showed that a diet low in fat, high in vegetable protein and high in quality carbohydrates reduced all-cause mortality, including cardiovascular disease and cancer.
In particular, the overall risk of death was reduced by 18%, from heart disease – 16%, and from cancer – 18%.
Meanwhile, low-carb dieters faced a higher risk of death, heart disease and cancer.
Recall that in early March 2023, another group of researchers found that the Mediterranean diet can reduce the likelihood of cardiovascular disease in women by 24% and all-cause mortality by 23%.
