Sean Rosemary, vice president of research and development at Pure Storage, emphasized that the main driver of this change is the cost of electricity. Pure’s cost-cutting SSDs and Data Flow Modules (DFMs) also helped drive prices down, while Rosemary stressed the importance of power consumption.
But hard drive manufacturers have a different point of view. Seagate, a hard drive manufacturer, has denied claims that SSDs will override HDDs.
Research firm Gartner questions Rosemary’s 2028 timeline, estimating that by 2026, enterprise-class SSDs will account for only 35% of the exabytes of data stored.
