Firefox currently has an expiring contract with Google, which gives Mozilla the option to renew the contract or switch to another search engine. Microsoft sees an opportunity to replace Google with Bing in Firefox, but there’s no guarantee that this will significantly increase Bing usage (users can always make it obsolete).
However, Microsoft is also seizing a potentially bigger opportunity with Apple’s Safari browser. The contract between Apple and Google, which benefits the latter greatly, expires next year. Microsoft can take advantage of this opportunity to promote Bing as the main search engine on iPhone as well.
