Researchers from Southern Federal University have identified places in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans where heavy metals are associated with plastic. Scientists emphasize that the results of the study, published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, are extremely important for the planning of resort areas in Russia.
The coast is a kind of natural barrier where various materials, including plastic, are deposited by land or sea currents. Russian scientists analyzed data on the relationship of five heavy metals (cadmium, nickel, mercury, chromium, zinc) with plastic particles on sea and ocean coasts.
The most numerous were beaches where chrome was associated with plastic and the least with mercury. At the same time, heavy metals can be both impurities in plastic and “bind” to it after getting into the environment. Scientists also emphasize that the tourism and accommodation sector is an important factor in pollution.
