Researchers from the Institute of Diamond and Precious Metals Geology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences proved that natural iron is found in the Earth’s mantle at a depth of 40 to 50 kilometers. The scientists’ article was published in the journal “Petrology”.

Natural manifestations of native – pure – iron are very rare. Except for meteorites, it has only been found in a few places on Earth. In our country, it was found in the north of the Russian Platform, in the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Yakutia.

Russian scientists analyzed samples of telluric (“terrestrial”) native iron from all known deposits. They managed to prove that the reduction of iron to its metallic state occurs in an intermediate magma chamber at a high temperature (1450-1550 °C) at a depth of 40 to 50 kilometers from the Earth’s surface. This process occurred as a result of interaction with a liquid saturated with a solution of hydrogen (up to 75%), methane, nitrogen and carbon dioxide rising from deep regions of the mantle, possibly even at the boundary of the planet’s core.
