With reference to the press service of the Priority 2030 program, Gazeta.Ru, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) reported that researchers have developed a test system based on CRISPR/Cas technology that reliably detects many infectious diseases.

The platform uses fluorescent probes, which are organic compounds that change one color or another when the Cas12 protein recognizes the genetic material of the virus in the sample. The cell matches the DNA of the virus entering it with the “library” of the virus DNA stored within it. If the cell recognizes a familiar virus, it cuts the Cas12 DNA, preventing infection.

The system can be configured to detect any virus or bacteria. It takes a long time, but as a result the virus is detected in 10-20 minutes – longer than express tests, but much faster than PCR, and also much more accurate for both. The diagnostic platform does not require special equipment and training – a sample is added to the reagent mix and the virus is detected in a test tube.
