Researchers from Sechenov University have developed a method for obtaining cartilage tissue from the patient’s own cells. Gazeta.Ru, referring to the press service of the university, is close in its characteristics to the natural tissues of the joint and will allow to delay its replacement in case of arthrosis and even avoid it.

Another way to slow down the destruction of cartilage in arthrosis is to transplant the patient’s own chondrocytes (cartilage cells) developed from the removed joint tissue. This allows you to delay the replacement of the joint for five to seven years. However, during transplantation, fibrous cartilage, which is not suitable for the joint and wears out quickly, is formed, unlike “natural” hyaline.

Russian researchers have found that it is possible to obtain a hyaline-like tissue in structure by chemically suppressing one of the signaling pathways during the cultivation of chondrocytes, which ensure the interaction between neighboring cells.

The researchers first conducted studies on mouse cells, then tested chondrocytes from joint replacement patients. Success was achieved even in the cells of people over the age of 65. The researchers emphasize that this method can be easily applied to existing treatment methods.
