Russian researchers have developed a rapid test that can quickly detect heart failure. The method is easy to use – it can be used at home or in the ambulance.
Electrocardiography (ECG) is traditionally used to confirm the diagnosis of heart failure, which is sometimes difficult to spot due to its resemblance to other diseases. Experts from the Saratov National Research State University named after NG. Chernyshevsky developed a much faster method of immunochemical testing.
A drop of blood is dripped onto the test strip in it, and after 15 minutes it is illuminated with ultraviolet light. The test determines whether the level of natriuretic hormone produced in the left ventricle, a biomarker of heart failure, is elevated in the blood. When present, a fluorescent quantum dot antibody is attached to the hormone and acts as a “signal”.
After highlighting the test with an ultraviolet lamp, two stripes appear on it. The second band is a control band, indicating the performance of the test itself, but the absence of the first indicates the presence of a critical hormone content.
