Wang faced six charges of theft of trade secrets between 2016 and 2018 for unauthorized access to project data.
It is worth noting that the engineer works at Apple as an algorithm developer to speed up the process of recognizing real objects. Because of his role, he had “wide access” to databases containing information about the project.
At the same time, only a few thousand of the institution’s more than 135,000 employees had access to this information.
In 2016, Apple reportedly downloaded “all Autopilot source code” and stole additional information about the tech’s systems and hardware shortly before it was fired in 2018.
After Wang was fired, he didn’t tell Apple about his plans, but it was later revealed that he accepted a job offer from the US branch of a Chinese company developing autonomous driving technology.
