Instead of using traditional methods such as malware or phishing emails, Leak Wolf gained access to company systems using the accounts or credentials of employees and IT contractors. After careful analysis of the leaked data found on public networks, the hackers identified business email addresses and reused passwords applied to various accounts. This neglect of cybersecurity practices was critical to the success of their attacks.
To avoid detection, Leak Wolf rented computing resources in Russia or used a VPN, taking advantage of widespread remote work. This made it difficult for the security services of the target companies to identify the perpetrators.
More than 40 organizations in various sectors such as business, education and IT have fallen victim to Leak Wolf’s actions. Interestingly, the group does not act for financial gain, but rather as hackers driven by political beliefs, the publication reported.
