Tinkoff Bank will issue UnionPay cards to all its customers starting May 23. The bank also changed the fee conditions for issuing and servicing cards of the Chinese payment system.

Tinkoff to launch UnionPay for payments in South America, Africa and Asia

It will not be possible to pay by card in the European Union, USA, Great Britain, Georgia and Israel. However, it will work in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, in many countries in Asia, Africa and South America, RBC reported, referring to the bank’s customer service operator.

A client can get a virtual card absolutely free, while issuing a physical one will cost 1000 rubles. UnionPay cards will be issued as add-on cards to existing customers.

  • In October 2022, the Chinese payment system UnionPay limited the service in Russia of its cards issued outside the country. The measures were taken out of fear of secondary sanctions. The Chinese payment system was considered a partial alternative to Visa and Mastercard, which stopped working in Russia on March 10, 2022.
