National Telecommunications and Artificial Intelligence Technology Initiative expert Alexei Rabin said the proliferation of 5G networks could increase the energy consumption of megacities like Moscow tenfold.
This is because of the significant power demand of 5G base stations. Experts state that the difference in power consumption between 4G and 5G stations may exceed 100%. Such stations have to be installed every few hundred meters, so the energy costs to maintain the grid in Moscow can increase tenfold.
According to Rabin, the problem can be solved by developing new algorithms for programming radio channel resources for base stations. But he also admits that this won’t eliminate the multi-station factor.
