Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have developed a method for extracting energy from air using a simple perforated nanofilm made from a variety of materials.

The technology relies on using different charges on the film to create a current, similar to how clouds create lightning. The key point in this method is the pore size in the film.

The new study includes two layers of nanofilm. The top layer has holes smaller than 100 nm. This acts as a sieve to keep the water molecules on the surface until they pass through the pores.

When these molecules come together in the upper film, they produce a greater natural electric charge than the charge in the lower film. The imbalance between the two layers creates an electric current similar to how lightning forms in clouds.
