TJ Fletcher, 35, has been arrested as a result of the largest investigation in history, in which nearly 170 users of his service were detained.
iSpoof was a private phone number spoofing service. With its help, scammers can look for victims, pretending to be representatives of banks and tax authorities.
The plan worked simply: the attackers convinced the potential victim that he was in danger due to questionable activities. After that, the scammers urged him to disclose financial data or transfer funds to accounts under their control.
Note that iSpoof is a paid service – users bought minutes for fake bitcoin calls. Damage amounted to around $60 million, according to investigators, and this figure is only for the UK. Overall, we’re talking more than $125 million.
