When an Office program crashes on opening, it’s usually because of an add-in that contains errors. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have a safe mode that is helpful when you cannot use one of these programs normally. This will install the program without any extra features that could cause problems.
Step 1: Ctrl key
For example, to start Word in safe mode, first find the Word shortcut in the start menu, taskbar, or desktop. then hold Ctrl key and click the shortcut. This causes the message to appear: you hold down the ctrl key† Do you want to start Word in safe mode? click OK To start the application in safe mode. Then the application opens in the familiar working environment.
Step 2: Safe Mode
In safe mode, the program does not activate any add-ons. Plugins are extensions that you install to provide additional functionality to the application. But there are still some things that safe mode blocks. For example, you cannot save Office templates and the Office program will not automatically open the recovered documents. The latter may also be the cause of the problem.
You cannot save preferences in safe mode, the auto-fix list will not load and the list will not save changes. Any adjustments you previously made on the command bar will be undone. If you are working in Microsoft Sharepoint Workspace, functions such as task scheduler, messages, notifications and synchronization are disabled.
Step 3: Disable Items
If Word, Excel or PowerPoint starts correctly in safe mode, first check which add-ins the program will load in normal mode. Choose still in safe mode File / Options† Select in the left bar Additions† At the bottom of the Manage box, Disabled Items and then click the button Start†
A list of items disabled in safe mode appears. You can disable or just uninstall this plugin here. To exit safe mode, exit the program and restart, but normally.
If the problem persists even in safe mode, it’s a good idea to uninstall and reinstall the program.
