The latest iPhone Pro models and some iPad versions have a LiDAR scanner. The sensor uses tiny invisible lasers to determine distance and depth. More applications are emerging that work with LiDAR. What can you do with it?

1. Create 3D scans

Photos allow you to capture your favorite travel spots, but it’s much more fun if you can create an interactive 3D model of these environments. As a result, you can walk again in that picturesque village or sit in the cozy restaurant that you often go to during your vacation.

Applications such as Polycam, RoomScan LiDAR, and Canvas: Pocket 3D Measurements allow you to create 3D scans using the LiDAR scanner. The apps are also suitable for creating 3D models of collections. This way you can instantly digitize your sneaker or cute toy collection. Polycam in particular has a large community where users post their creations. Think of it like Instagram for 3D models.

Most apps are free to use, but have a paid option that removes certain restrictions or lets you create higher-quality scans.

2. Better photos in the dark

In recent years, Apple has made significant improvements to iPhone and iPad cameras that allow you to take better photos in low light conditions. However, an iPhone with a LiDAR scanner is much more successful in this regard, especially with its special night mode. LiDAR has six times faster autofocus in low light, and you can see it right away in the photos.

With the help of the scanner, the camera can estimate depths much better, which is better reflected in portrait photos. You don’t need to open any special functions on your iPhone or iPad. The LiDAR scanner starts working immediately when you take a photo.

3. Measure accurately

We have already written that LiDAR can better predict depths and distances. This is also useful when you want to measure something. Apple developed the Measure app specifically for this. The application is standard on your phone, but if you accidentally deleted it, you can download the tool again for free from the App Store.

Measurement uses augmented reality to measure distances. Point your camera at an object, tap the plus icon to measure the distance, and move your phone or tablet in a specific direction. Thanks to LiDAR, you can now accurately measure distances.

4. AR Apps

In addition to the Measure app, there are of course many more tools that use the LiDAR scanner. What about IKEA Place, where you can put furniture in your digital living room, or LEGO Hidden Side, where you bring your favorite LEGO set to life. The possibilities are endless!

With IKEA Place you can place almost any furniture in your living room.
