Have you plugged your iPhone or Android phone into the charger but your device is not charging? Before you go to the store to buy a new phone, you can take a few steps that can fix the problem.

1. Check the charging port

Your phone’s charging port can quickly become dirty with dust, lint, or food particles, causing the phone to stop charging. Point a flashlight at the port to see if there is a lot of dirt inside, and use a toothpick, for example, to remove dust and lint from the port. Do this carefully. To avoid permanently damaging your phone’s port, do not use paper clips.

2. Try a different cable or adapter

If your phone port is clean then check if the charging cable or adapter is the problem using a different one. A cable can quickly become damaged if you pull with too much force from your phone. If your phone supports wireless charging, you can try that too.

Whenever possible: check if your phone can charge wirelessly.

3. Restart the phone

Sometimes software problems prevent your smartphone from charging. In such a case, restarting your phone may help.

4. Check for water damage

Most new phones are (splash) waterproof and will continue to work after you drop your smartphone in water. But not always, for example if your phone has been in the water for more than half an hour. Especially salt water is not good for your smartphone and can damage the charging port.

5. Replace Battery or Charging Port

If the problem is still not resolved, you can send your device to a repair shop as a last resort. It may find out that the battery or the charging port has stopped working. Fortunately, you don’t need a new phone right away: a new battery or charging port will fix the problem. Changing it yourself is not easy, so you will need a specialist to fix the problem for you. And of course there are costs.

Typically, you’ll quickly lose between 50 and 90 Euros to replace a battery or charging port, depending on your device. But in most cases this is a cheaper solution than buying a new smartphone.
