In principle, anyone connected to your Wi-Fi network can access your Chromecast. This is pretty annoying if you want to prevent guests from running the streaming device. Here we show you how you can prevent others from controlling your Chromecast via notifications.

It streams many different services like Chromecast, Netflix and YouTube. Since your smartphone also works as an instant remote control and not all services are equally stable in terms of operation, Google has even decided to keep the control buttons in the picture during the broadcast. This is true if you play media via Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast Audio, Google Nest or Home devices, and TVs and speakers with Chromecast built-in.

This change was made through Play Services, so it doesn’t require a system update to add the feature to Android. Such notifications are not available on iOS devices.

This is how notifications work

Not only are constantly on-screen notifications annoying, they can also be seen by other users connected to your WiFi network. This way everyone on the same network can see who is broadcasting.

Thanks to this notification, it is also possible for others to pause or end your broadcast. However, the controls are limited, so only play, pause, end, and fast forward and rewind are possible. On its own, it is useful to be able to control the broadcast with another connected device in case the device from which the broadcast was started loses its connection.

Disable notifications

To disable Chromecast notifications Google Home app install it on your smartphone or tablet and in the upper right corner of the screen Devices open the menu. Open the map of the Chromecast you no longer want to receive notifications from and click on the three-dot icon to go to settings. Look down Device information and change the option Let others manage your published media from.

However, you can also immediately hit the notification and then the settings icon to get to the settings menu of the Google Home app. Another option is to go to the settings on your phone. then tap Google and then Devices and sharing. below Broadcast options put you Media Controls for Broadcast Devices from.

You can also set up a guest network if you are afraid that guests will continue to hijack your devices at home, for example via a Chromecast. For your guests, a guest network works the same as a regular WiFi network: they provide access to the Internet. Typically the guest network is further separated from the rest of your network. Guests will then not have access to your PC, NAS or other network devices. If you have Ziggo or KPN, you can set up a guest network in the internet providers’ app. With other providers, you can do this by diving into the settings of the router.
