Once the situation was resolved, Apple released a statement last Tuesday (10) explaining the entire situation Covering iPhone 12 and complaints in France, It turned out that the device was emitting more radiation than allowed by law.

According to Apple, “the device is safe to use and has always been that way”It meets worldwide power transmission standards that are approved before the device goes on sale.

The results of the Agence Française Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR) revealed possible irregularities and even called for a ban on the sale of the model. In fact, the changes were due to a specific situation of the Apple mobile phone.

The thing is that the iPhone adopted body distance sensing technology some time ago, which slightly increases the transmission power, for example, when the user leaves the phone on the table.

Since the French authority did not take this distance detection mechanism into account when assessing the radiation of the device, the mobile phone appeared to exceed the specified limits, without causing any problems even if it is not close to the body.

iPhone 12 Radiation Case

In September this year, during the launch week of the iPhone 15, ANFR called for a halt to sales of the iPhone 12 in France and even a recall of sales of the iPhone 12 after detecting levels of electromagnetic waves above those required by law in that generation.

Apple has promised to present a defense argument and, if necessary, release an iOS update that will fix this radiation issue. Two weeks later, the same local authority tested the fix and approved the changes, releasing the iPhone released in 2020 for use and commercialization.

See Apple’s statement on iOS update

“iOS 17.1 includes an update for iPhone 12 users in France to meet this specific testing protocol that requires less power even when the device is on a stable surface away from the body.

iPhone 12 will no longer increase the allowable power when away from the body (for example, when placed on a table). Therefore, in areas with low cellular network coverage, this change in antenna transmission power may cause slightly lower cellular network performance in case of use away from the body. The vast majority of users should not notice any difference.”
