iPhone remains the most popular smartphone and the smartphone young people want

When it comes to technology, young people are clear about what they want!

87% of teens in the US have an iPhone

Having the best camera on the market, using iMessage, or being able to show off cool accessories, perhaps these are some of the reasons that have made the iPhone the most popular smartphone among teenagers in the United States for the second year in a row. The numbers are decisive: While 87% of the young people surveyed own an “iPhone”, 88% expect their next mobile phone to be an “iPhone”.

The research data Piper Sandler shared this year is based on a survey of 9,193 adolescents with an average age of 15.7 in 49 states of the United States.

iPhone has no competition among young people

Interest in “iPhone” has increased rapidly among young people. In October 2013, 55% of teens reported owning an “iPhone” while 24% owned an Android device.

The results also showed that iPhone preference has little to do with leveraging the product ecosystem. Apple Watch preference increased slightly compared to last year. 34% of young people surveyed own an Apple Watch; this rate was 31% in 2023. 10% of teens said they plan to buy an Apple Watch in the next six months. This rate was 16% in the fall of 2022.

The survey didn’t just focus on hardware preference. When users in this age range were asked about their favorite apps, the answers were not so definitive.

Apple Pay is the most popular payment application for young people and 42% reported using the service in the past month. ‌So Apple’s option beats Cash App (27%), Venmo (20%) and PayPal (10%).

When it comes to streaming services, Apple continues to expect to surpass its main rival. Apple Music ranked second after Spotify. 70% of young people surveyed said they use Spotify as their music service, while just over 30% use Apple Music. While 46% of teens who pay for a service pay for Spotify, only 30% pay for “Apple Music.”

Apple introduced the new generation iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max during the Wonderlust event on September 12. Two weeks later, interest in the world’s most famous smartphone was confirmed by the demand for the first shipments, making it a favorite among users beyond teenagers.
