instagram stories In their latest update, they use generative artificial intelligence. The popular social network feature now allows you to remove the background of a photo and replace it with a synthetically created one from the text description.

Ahmad Al-Dakhleh, head of generative artificial intelligence at Meta, introduced this new feature in a post on Threads. When creating new stories on Instagram, users will be able to clear the background using a new button that will be built into the top edge of the app’s interface.

Once this is done, you can create a new background from simple text instructions. The operation of this tool is quite simple. In the demo posted by the aforementioned person, you can see how a photo of a man lying on the ground changes when he asks to remove the grass and “invent” it so that dogs appear.

An interesting feature of this generative AI feature is that while each user can create their own background, Instagram Stories offers some tips presets depending on the image type. Without a doubt, an original option to add a creative twist to publications.

Of course, we’ll have to see how this works in real life. It is likely, at least initially, that this new feature achieve better results with original images with simple backgrounds. If what appears in the background is very difficult to detect and therefore difficult to erase, the final product may not be optimal. At least until the parameters of the AI model used are refined.

AI-generated backgrounds make their way into Instagram Stories

Another interesting element of this new Instagram Stories feature is that, as seen in the demo, AI will offer options for the final result. This way, users will be able to choose which synthetic they like best or which best matches what they asked for.

Once the story is created, it will be published along with a sticker with a text description used to create the background. A “Try It” button will also be displayed so that other people can do the same.

Although Meta does not specify this, it is not uncommon for the latter to attempt to serve as a warning against possible claims from regulators. Let’s not forget that governments are putting pressure on platforms to explicitly notify when the content includes elements created or modified by artificial intelligence.

The bad news is that, at least for now, Instagram Stories backgrounds are created using artificial intelligence. They are only available in the USA.. The feature has already started rolling out to users in this country. Meta has not said when they plan to launch it internationally, although it cannot be ruled out that this will happen in the coming months.

But the latest news from Instagram isn’t limited to stories. The social network also announced additional measures aimed at limiting the reach of spam, especially in the accounts of content creators.

That is why the application will begin to implement a tool that will automatically identify subscribers or respond to requests suspected of being bots or spammers. Users will be able to manually check if they really exist and even delete them en masse. Something similar will happen with tag queries, search simplify moderation profiles with many interactions.
