Samsung sent the Galaxy S24 Ultra into space. The state-of-the-art mobile phone with advanced photo settings was part of an experiment by the brand to capture images of the Earth.

According to website PetaPixelSamsung, which received special images from the test, sent four Galaxy S24 Ultra units into space using stratospheric balloons.

In all, Smartphones reached an altitude of 120 thousand feet (equivalent to approximately 36 km). At each predefined interval, the cell phones took high-resolution photos of the location they were currently flying over.

The launch took place on January 25, 2024 at four different locations: Cities of Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Sierra Nevada mountains and Grand Canyon.

The flight lasted six days in total and all devices were successfully recovered. To accomplish the landing, the balloons’ hydrogen was released remotely and parachutes were activated, falling to Earth at low speed.

The balloons passed over the western United States, photographing both the landscapes and the curvature of the planet seen from a distance.

Samsung configured the devices to take photos with different configurations of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Zoom of the device up to 5 times without loss of quality, wide-angle lens for landscapes and different focal lengths.

In the experiment, 150 high resolution photos But Samsung hasn’t yet released all the materials at once or announced what it will do with them, at least for now.
