Zach Nelson of the tech YouTube channel JerryRigEverything just unveiled a new phone. Pixel 9 Pro Foldable from Google to the infamous durability test.
Pixel 9 Pro Fold for $1,800 “super “It’s durable,” Google claims, but it probably wasn’t thinking about Nelson’s unique way of “testing” phones when it made that claim.
The test results aren’t exactly pretty, but the presence of a fair amount of scratches, creases and burns, as well as some enthusiastically executed bends, isn’t a big surprise.
After scraping a few rather nasty marks off the outside of Google’s new foldable with a box cutter and cutting his finger in the process, Nelson throws an absurd amount of dirt and sand at the phone “to see if the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has any dust protection. The answer, it quickly turns out, is “No, it doesn’t.”
Next comes the open flame, which after a long ignition leaves its mark on both the inner and outer screen.
Finally, the long-awaited and highly unscientific bend test. Unsurprisingly, foldables rarely work well if they’re not used correctly. But Nelson was surprised to see that in the case of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the device broke not at the hinge, but right down the middle, where its two antenna lines are located.
At the end of the video, the phone is a complete disaster. “It’s a big mess,” Nelson notes.
Rest assured, even the most clumsy and irresponsible smartphone user will never find themselves with a phone in this condition. But the Nelson Durability Test at least gives us an idea of how much abuse a device can take before it breaks.
