Samsung

It’s a well-known fact that Apple products retain their value much longer than third-party products. Or yes? According to the latest data from SellCell, this may be changing.

According to its report, SellCell reports that iPhones They still hold their value better than the competition, but they depreciate faster with each new release. At the same time, Samsung’s flagship models began to last a little longer. In fact, and get ready for a lot of numbers, the price of the iPhone has dropped almost 5% year-over-year since the iPhone 12’s release. iPhone 16 loses value 8% faster than iPhone 15 and lost an average of 41.2% of its value in the first two weeks of its launch. This is a much larger loss than the iPhone 14 and 15 models: 33% and 33.2%, respectively.

If we look at the iPhone 11’s annualized performance, it shows a total depreciation of 43.8% in the first year of launch. This figure rises to 46.2% with the iPhone 13 and 48.2% with the iPhone 15.

By comparison, Samsung’s depreciation rate is slowing. The Galaxy S22 series lost 66.7% of its value within a year of launch, while the Galaxy S23 lost only 61.7%. This represents a 5.6% increase in value retention. Even the Galaxy S24, which hasn’t been available for a full year, shows an average loss of just 50.4% in the first six months across all models, which is 3.7% more than the S23 over the same period.

The reason phones lose value is not because of lower quality, but because of increased competition. Samsung brings more value to every new version with improved functionality, new features and improved build quality. Android’s ongoing improvements have also made it more accessible to wary Apple users, attracting more customers.

This is a surprising turn in the market, especially given Apple’s reputation for maintaining resale value. This shows that Samsung is making improvements in every iteration of its phones and providing more value to the market, but this does not mean that Apple is making an inferior product. iPhone 16 is an incredible phone, but no less Samsung Galaxy S24.

As the gap between the two platforms narrows, the phone market may be driven largely by style preferences rather than brand loyalty.
