Over the past few years, assistant Samsung Bixby It felt like an afterthought. Especially in 2024 when Google launches Twins and Apple radically improves SiriBixby sat in the corner with no new features to compete with.

However, it seems that the situation is finally changing. During the launch of the Galaxy W25 and W25 Flip in China, Samsung also announced its “next generation Bixby”. This new generation of Bixby promises a healthy dose of new artificial intelligence features, many of which should put it on a much more level playing field with Gemini and Siri.

First, the new Bixby should be much better at understanding complex issues and will be able to “handle multi-tasking instructions contained in a single sentence.” Much like Siri’s recent advancements in being able to understand questions/commands when asked in a more natural way, it appears that Bixby is being treated similarly.

Additionally, the new Bixby will be able to see what’s happening on your phone/tablet screen and use it to better answer questions. For example, you can view or text a restaurant and ask Bixby to “go here” to get turn-by-turn directions to that location. Bixby will also apparently get a new tool for translating websites, as well as the ability to create documents, slideshows and spreadsheets after receiving a prompt.

Bixby appears to be getting a new full-screen user interface. It’s unclear if it will replicate the glowing screen effect featured in the new Siri, but it will have a fresher coat of paint compared to the Bixby we have today.

This all sounds promising, but there’s a pretty big catch. Samsung hasn’t announced when the next generation of Bixby will be released, other than the China-exclusive Galaxy W25 and W25 Flip smartphones.

It’s reasonable to assume that we’ll see the new Bixby arrive in the US with the series. Samsung Galaxy S25 in early 2025, although this is purely speculation. It’s possible that this new Bixby won’t be ready for wider release until the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 launch in late 2025.

When the new Bixby is ready for prime time, it will be a highly anticipated launch. Samsung is no stranger to the world of artificial intelligence this year, betting heavily on its Galaxy AI suite, and Bixby has been strangely absent from all this. Whether these updates are enough to seriously challenge Siri and Gemini remains to be seen, but Samsung is at least on the right track here.
