The MagSafe port, HDMI connector, and microSD card slot might not be the only things Apple is bringing back to its MacBooks. The Cupertino-based company has also been able to restore one of its most iconic design elements from its laptops, which it abandoned in 2015: illuminated logo on the case.

At least that’s what the May 2022 patent, published just a few days ago in the US Patent and Trademark Office, indicates. This one in particular concerns the work of what would be “Partial mirror structures with illumination” for electronic devices, and Apple describes it as follows.

“The logo or other designs of the device may be provided with a partially reflective illuminated mirror. A mirror can give a logo or other structures a shiny look by obscuring the view of internal components. At the same time, the partial transparency of the mirror allows light from inside the device to pass through the mirror.”

This is, without a doubt, a clear indication that this is a system similar to the backlight that Apple has included in the MacBook. In this case, obviously, with a different technology, since the current MacBook and MacBook Pro have a significantly thinner body. Also, as a curious fact, Apple may allow apple to change color. Presumably the color of the device.

“One or more thin film layers may be configured to provide a partially reflective mirror with a desired visible light reflectance spectrum, a desired visible light transmission spectrum, and a desired visible light absorption spectrum. The reflectivity of the mirror can be adjusted so that the mirror serves as a one-way mirror for a logo or other design. The mirror can be a neutral color, such as light gray, or a non-neutral color, such as gold.”

Will the backlit apple come to the MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro and M2 Max?

Details on which models will include this possible technology are not yet available. We also have to consider that this is a patent and not everything that Apple or any other company publishes becomes the final product. In any case, the presence of highlighting the apple in the future MacBook Pro with M2 Pro chip and M2 Max, can be an interesting additional novelty of these models. First of all, if we take into account that on an aesthetic level they can appear without any changes.

Illuminated apple, let’s remember it was first removed in 2015. The culprit was the 12-inch MacBook, which was significantly thinner in design than the rest of the versions available in the company’s catalog. If we finally see this technology in a MacBook Pro, the backlit logo will be back in 2023. And the launch of the aforementioned models is expected no earlier than next year.
