After two years and an investment of just over $70 million, Xiaomi introduced the concept smartphone Mi MIX Alpha to the world. Everything about it was impressive: the design of the screen that occupies 180% of the body of the mobile, the triple 100 MP camera, 5G support and the price of around R$ 11.7k (which is truly breathtaking). But the new mobile isn’t for everyone: only 100 will be produced, and the company doesn’t expect to make a dime out of it.

According to Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO, the company’s aim in launching a concept mobile phone is to subvert the idea of a smartphone that someone has. Xiaomi engineers have confirmed that mass production of the Mi MIX Alpha is impractical due to cost and labor.

“The Mi MIX Alpha is not a foldable screen phone, dual screen phone or waterfall screen phone, but a concept device that represents the shape of future smartphones,” Lei Jun said. Lin Bin, president and founder of Xiaomi, has confirmed that the company will invest an additional $1.41 billion in research and development of future mobile phones.

The screen of the new smartphone has raised doubts about the viability of owning a mobile phone, where the idea of using a window film to protect the screen sounds ridiculous. Lin Bin said, “The Mi MIX Alpha uses the same principle as other foldable screen smartphones, but it goes far beyond what is known about glass bonding. When Mi MIX Alpha launches in December, it will come with this technology – the result will be much nicer than if we use regular plastic for folding screens.
