Turn a Nintendo Wii into a Mac with an M1 chip
The M1 chip has given new life to two classics of the technology world!
A tech fan decided to combine two of this world’s classics and make them work at the same time. Thus, with an absolute display of patience and expertise, YouTuber Luke Miani managed to turn Nintendo Wii into Mac miniExcellent gaming device with Apple’s M1 chip.
Of course, the process was recorded, down to the details of the process. Before starting, Miani cleared the majority’s doubts, explaining: What prompted you to take on such a challenge?
Two in one with the signature of Apple and Nintendo
In addition to desire, Miani observed: Both devices had appropriate technical requirements for the idea to be viable. As the youtuber explains:
I was looking at an old Wii the other day and thought the HMM looked the same size to me. What if I put a Mac mini in there? A silicon Wii from Apple?!? Sure! Today we’re going to do a DIY Mac mini Wii conversion that’s perfect for playing retro games on a Mac. Wii games, Nintendo Gamecube, or even PS2 emulation via Dolphin and Aethersx2 in a Wii bundle? Sure!
As Miani reveals in the video, both the Mac mini and Wii have easy-to-repair designs. Opening them up, he listed a few changes he needed to make to the Mac mini to fit in the Wii case, as the video shows:
With the first requirement approved, Miani started the process to get to work. solve power supply problem. To solve many of these challenges, he used 3D printing to create custom components, power Bluetooth, and more.
Thanks to the solutions you found, Miani managed to “work perfectly” the final product. Despite the necessary changes, the M1 chip still holds its own. Benchmarks show only a minor loss of performance due to the removal of the full-size fan.
Finally, the acid test happened when the Mac mini inside the Wii tried to emulate classic Nintendo games and much more, just like a regular Mac. And it doesn’t end here: Nintendo games are upscaled to 4K resolution.
While this isn’t the first time a user is converting an Apple product, these creations rarely feature devices from other companies, so Miani’s work is truly remarkable.
