Samsung this Tuesday (17) unveiled its new 200 megapixel (MP) image sensor, isocell hp2. This translates to 200 million 0.6 micrometer pixels in 1/1.3 inch optical format, specially designed for “striking mobile viewing in the premium smartphones of tomorrow”.

But this “tomorrow” already has a specific date. The new sensor is already in production and should equip the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Released on February 1. By providing a sensor size already used in 108MP smartphone cameras, Samsung promises to deliver better photos without having to make thicker devices.

In a press release, Samsung explained the “magic” behind the HP2’s versatility: by Tetra 2 Pixel, a proprietary technology that simulates different pixel sizes to adapt to lighting levels. That is, in low light the sensor “converts to 1.2 µm 50 MP or 2.4 µm 12.5 MP by connecting four to 16 neighboring pixels,” the ad says.

In addition to using different pixel grouping options to capture 12.5 MP, 50 MP, and even full 200 MP resolution (AI-enhanced) images, Samsung explains that the new sensor will operate in 50 MP mode to capture video. to “minimize clipping and allow videographers to capture as much of the scene as possible”.

The light capture itself is also improved on Samsung’s new sensor. For this, A technology called Dual Vertical Gate (D-VTG) improves color reproduction and eliminates overexposure to bright light. In this way, the new feature aims to reduce faded photos in very bright environments.

Finally, HDR (high dynamic range) photos will also get an upgrade. Samsung’s new Dual Gain feature (DSG). The feature can scan each pixel’s exposure data at two different levels to separate light and dark data when shooting in high-contrast situations in 50MP mode. The result is HDR images with sharper, brighter details.
