Xperia 1 IV. This is the name of Sony’s new stellar phone, which was officially unveiled this Wednesday. The phone brings with it a component upgrade to meet the high standards of 2022. But in addition, it offers some pretty interesting ideas in aspects such as photography, where the Japanese company is a reference with its Alpha series. cameras.

Externally, the Xperia 1 IV is very similar to its predecessor Xperia 1 III. It retains the 21:9 aspect ratio that has been a feature of the Xperia for several years now, its sides are almost flat, and overall the lines are fairly straight, simple and minimalist. Gorilla Glass Victus front and back. And as expected from the Japanese brand, the phone is both submersible and dust resistant (IP68 certified).

The screen, in addition to the 21:9 format characteristic of the brand, has a resolution of 4K, a frequency of up to 120 Hz, OLED and a diagonal of 6.5 inches. The brand lists it as 50% brighter than its predecessor and includes a real-time HDR system that improves visibility in some cases. This experience is also complemented by the Dolby Atmos sound technology so popular in the audiovisual industry.

Inside the Xperia 1 IV is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, the same one that powers the major Android smartphones of the year. This is not only one of the most powerful chips on the market, but also supports 5G and Wi-Fi 6E standards. Next to said chip is a module with 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of memory and a 5000 mAh battery compatible with fast charging (50% in 30 minutes) and wireless (Qi standard).

Sony doubles varifocal telephoto lenses

One of the most interesting new features of the Xperia 1 IV is the telephoto lens. This is able to fluctuate its focal length from 85 to 125 millimeters, which is equivalent to an increase in relation to the focal length of the main camera by about 3.5 and 5 times, respectively.

These types of solutions provide a very interesting additional versatility. Having intermediate steps between the main camera, which is typically 20 to 30mm on mobile devices, and long-range telephoto lenses, such as the 5x zoom found on many phones, is vital from a creative standpoint. For example: for a portrait of a person, a 5x telephoto lens is probably not the best choice; but with 20-30 mm lenses, you should not do this either because of how they deform the face. In the case of the Xperia 1 IV, for example, we have 85mm, which would be a better solution.

All sensors are listed by Sony as twelve megapixels and Exmor RS, though no specific sensor code is given. The front camera sensor is also twelve megapixels, which is capable of recording video in 4K and HDR. And the lenses of each of the cameras, in addition to the fact that they are signed by ZEISS, have a special treatment to avoid glare in photographs.

This set is also complemented by a 3D ToF sensor that allows you to create depth maps along with various AI algorithms to generate bokeh as realistic as possible.

In terms of video, the new Xperia 1 IV is capable of recording in 4K at up to 120 fps with all cameras, and even in slow motion at 5 times slower than natural. Added to all this, in addition, real-time eye autofocus, stabilization during video recording using SteadyShot technology and a multi-frame recording system that allows you to record video with a large range without loss of resolution.

How much will the Xperia 1 IV cost?

The Japanese company will release this phone in mid-June for an estimated price of 1399 euros. That’s higher than other competing phones like Samsung or Apple, but yes, with some unique features like a 4K screen or a telephoto zoom lens.
