Roll-up panels should be the next evolution of flexible displays. During MWC 2023, a mobile technology event in Barcelona, Lenovo introduced two devices with this technology: A version of Motorola Rizr smartphone and ThinkPad laptop.

At first, the Motorola Rizr bendable phone reveals a compact 5-inch pOLED display on the front. By double tapping the power button, motorized system “opens” the canvas until it reaches 6.5 inches.
In particular, the Android interface itself aligns to the new screen ratio with automatic adjustment of apps and wallpapers. For more, you can set the panel to make the front camera and speakers visible for calls.
Unlike the prototypes that the brand has revealed before, Motorola Rizr’s foldable screen has a new function. “shrunk” screen becomes a secondary panel occupying one-third of the back of the device.
When you leave the phone with the “front screen” facing down, notifications, date and time information will start to show on the second screen. However, the company has not yet revealed whether the feature can be used for selfies with the front camera.
ThinkPad with retractable display
Roll-out display technology was also spotted on the concept model of Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptop. By clicking a button on the right edge of the computer, 12.7-inch screen enlarged to 15.4 inches.
For this “magic”, the device has two motors that slowly expand the screen. Then, click the side button again and the laptop returns to its compact size for portability.
Following the suggestion of the Thinkpad series, The purpose of the roll-up curtain is to provide a wider working area.. For example, the user can use the top half of the dashboard for a Google Meet meeting while editing a spreadsheet at the bottom.
Lenovo has not announced when devices with roll-up displays will be released. But because they are prototypes, it is possible that these innovations will never reach the general public.
