Samsung has enjoyed complete freedom in the foldable smartphone segment for several years now. But the competition is finally here, and some of them have already surpassed Samsung’s foldable devices in several important areas. Now it looks like Samsung is ready to take the next step, and the next Galaxy Z Flip 5 it could be the device that will finally take the company to the top once again.
According to the liquor ice universeSamsung’s next foldable phone will have a larger clamshell screen than the Oppo Find N2 Flip. Oppo’s latest version offers a 3.26-inch external display when closed, and with more screen real estate, it can do a lot more than the Galaxy Z Flip 4’s 4.1-inch secondary display.
Right now, the Galaxy Z Flip 4’s screen is limited to basic tasks like checking notifications, managing basic widgets and quick settings toggles, and paying with Samsung Pay. There’s not much you can do in terms of customization, especially app-level features.
There are third-party solutions like CoverScreen that let you run every installed app on a small screen. The experience is great on its own, but it’s not perfect and some of the really handy features are hidden behind paywalls.
Fix the biggest flaw of a great folding model
Samsung probably won’t be bringing all the power of One UI 5.1 to the cover screen, but allowing users to at least create shortcuts to their favorite apps and complete tasks without opening the phone would be great. In fact, this would be the best implementation of a “digital detox” secondary screen. Allowing users to perform quick app-related tasks directly from the cover screen will prevent them from opening their phone and being distracted by other irrelevant content appearing on the larger, more immersive internal flip screen.
With a large screen at its disposal, Samsung can far outperform the Galaxy Z Flip’s 5-inch display.
Lately, we’ve been hearing rumors about a redesigned hinge for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 that will pave the way for a truly gap-free design between the two halves of the phone. Given the shared history of engineering progress in the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold lineups, it’s likely that Samsung will apply the same attitude to its upcoming clamshell foldable.
